One of the standout moments this spring was the Log Cabin Art Contest, an event designed to spark creativity and historical curiosity in the talented second graders of Meridian Elementary School. On Tuesday, May 20th, the young artists, accompanied by their families, gathered at the Sanford Centennial Museum for a special celebration of their artistic achievements.
Guided by their dedicated art teacher, Allison Goodwin, each student was given the exciting challenge of depicting life in a traditional log cabin. With pencils, crayons, and imagination in hand, they set out to illustrate the simplicity, beauty, and resilience of early cabin living. The results were nothing short of impressive, showcasing the students’ unique interpretations of pioneer life.
This year's contest saw more than 110 entries, each one bringing a fresh perspective to the theme. After careful deliberation, the judges selected five winning artworks that stood out for their creativity, craftsmanship, and storytelling. The talented young artists were awarded a ribbon, a certificate, and a ticket for a free hot dog meal at the highly anticipated Founders Day celebration on September 6th.
A huge congratulations to our winners:
We commend all the participating students for their hard work and artistic talent—it was truly a joy to see their visions come to life!
For the volunteers at the museum, this event is always a delight, bringing as much joy to them as it does to the young artists themselves. Each year, they witness an outpouring of talent, enthusiasm, and creativity, and 2025 proved to be no exception.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the museum and experience the full exhibition of student artwork, which is proudly displayed in the 1889 Felix Schoolhouse. Each piece captures the spirit of history in a colorful, engaging way, offering a glimpse into how these young minds imagine log cabin life.
We also extend a heartfelt thank-you to our Sanford Historical Society (SHS) judges for their time, expertise, and dedication in selecting the winners:
Their support and keen eye for detail make this event possible each year!
Come and enjoy this beautiful display, celebrate the creativity of our local youth, and take part in the rich history that the Sanford Centennial Museum strives to preserve. We look forward to seeing you!
