Stump Puller Restored!

Our hardworking volunteers recently restored the turn of the century stump puller on the grounds of the Sanford Centennial Museum. Dave Haskin, Chuck Dinsmore, and Chris Heal made short work of replacing all the rotting and splitting logs that were succumbing to the elements. Special thanks go to Chris Heal for providing his mechanical tools and expertise in tackling this much needed project. Thanks to Nick Kraemer for the pictures. Everything was donated and it represents no cost to the museum.

This stump puller was originally donated to the museum by Morland and Anna (Steed) Hammond in the fall of 2002. It is 20 feet high, was purchased in 1909 by Adrian L. Steed and used to clear 140 acres near Lewis Road and M20. Following the intensive lumbering of this area, many thousands of stumps remained and had to be removed before the land could be farmed. According to the April 2003 issue of the Log Marks newsletter, it was moved to the museum by Dave Hartshorn and Dennis Cole.

The final installation is recorded in 2005 with the help of Harry Woods, Bill Lackie, George Thornton, Chuck Dinsmore, and Cole’s wrecker.

Stop by the museum grounds to see this outdoor display any time, it is next to the blacksmith shop.
